Who I Am And How I Started

I started photography out of frustration. I did mosaic art but had trouble putting my ideas onto a substrate, and had pictures in my head of the finished product but couldn’t make it. My Wife suggested photography as an alternative, said it was “Instant gratification” as you didn’t need to wait for film anymore. So she bought my first camera for me, a Pentax K-7, which i still have. and we went on a trip to Jasper and i never put the camera down.

My first event was relay for life, a cancer foundation event. A fellow photographer couldn’t make the event so i said i would do it.

After i took pictures of all the “walkers” it was about 2 am and i was bored. I noticed a band setting up to play in the park’s ampitheatre. so I proceeded to introduce myself and started taking pictures. They loved the photos and i enjoyed taking them in the absence of light, so i followed them around the local bar scene.

My first paid gig as a freelance to a band was at a local bar. I made a “handshake deal” with the bar manager so i would get backstage access to meet the bands and provide photos for social media in exchange for “richards red on tap”. I met several bands who liked my photos and got some paid gigs out of them. There, i learned how to shoot in low light without flash and also how to pull a photo out of the dark with editing.. After that i made my first set of “portfolio shots” and got to shoot for a major online digital magazine which gave me access to big bands such as Billy Talent, Monster Truck, Our Lady Peace, Earth Wind and Fire and Chicago. to name a few.

Soon after I decided to make my own magazine ( and received my first official accreditation in 2018 to shoot Metallica in Saskatoon. Fast forward to now I have 8 freelance photographers shooting festival concerts all over Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Paul Forges is a professional photographer specializing in event photography with low light as well as photo editing with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

Paul is also the editor of Live Music Magazine where he runs a digital magazine based in Western Canada and has shot several accredited concerts such as Godsmack, Ghost, Our Lady Peace, Metallica, Greta Van Fleet, Billy Talent, Corey Hart and many more.

"As a picky artist / musician I searched high and low for specialized, professional photographers and Paul Forges was an easy choice. His work is unique, it showchases me as an artist and has helped me build my brand as a musician. Paul communicates everything that is needed in advance of his projects and does a very professional job.
